Major Activities/Achievements : International Life Sciences Institute India, ILSI-India was launched in 1996. It has been working with leading scientists from India and abroad from Government, Academia, International Organizations and Industry. It has taken the lead on many issues of critical public health importance. ILSI-India has given focused attention to improving the nutrition status of the population in general and nutrition status of children, adolescent girls, women and elderly in particular. Food Safety and Agriculture Biotechnology are other important areas of its work. ILSI-India Board of Trustees includes leading scientists of the country representing diverse areas.ILSI-India conferences are addressed by bast national and international experts in the country. Some of the key achievements are listed below: – ILSI-India has paved the way for greater thrust on elimination of micronutrient malnutrition through micronutrient fortification of foods. It has organized about 22 conferences on food fortification between 1999-2009. -ILSI-India has paid special attention to the nutritional requirements of children, women, and elderly and focused attention on role of nutrition in management of problems relating to bone health and diabetes.Conferences have been organized on nutritional requirements of children and the findings have been widely circulated. – ILSI-India has been first institution in the country to organize scientific meetings with national and international experts on importance of Zinc and Vitamin D in health. -ILSI-India has also paid attention to rising incidence of childhood obesity and complications associated with it and has prepared guidelines for prevention through modification of diet, excercise and behavioral changes. -ILSI-INDIA has prepared Nutrition Guidelines for excellence in sports performance at the request of the Sports Authority of India. -ILSI-India has provided inputs to Government on regulations relating to nutritional labeling and health claims in different parts of the world. -ILSI-India has inspired the substitution of plethora of food laws by a single legislation i.e. Food Safety and Standards Act. -ILSI-India has taken the lead in the harmonization of food regulations in SAARC region with CODEX.A number of meetings have been organized since 1997 with FAO and CODEX Contact Points in SAARC countries. -ILSI-India has organized a number of programs – Conferences and Training Programs – on application of biotechnology in agriculture and provided inputs to the stakeholders including Government and academic institutions. -ILSI-India has organized programs for capacity building in nutrition, biotechnology and food safety for personnel working in food and allied industry and Government representatives. -ILSI-India has conducted programs on risk assessment for ensuring food and water safety. -ILSI-India has prepared document entitled “Water Quality Management: Vision 2025” focusing on improving water availability and water quality of drinking water in the country.
