Major Activities/Achievements : HRIDAY (Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth) is a Delhi-based voluntary organization of health professionals, social scientists and lawyers, engaged in awareness, advocacy and research aiming to promote informed health activism among youth in India, since 1992. HRIDAY was awarded the WHO Director General’s Award for contributions to tobacco control in 2002 and listed as a ‘Best Practice Model’ and recommended for global replication. Key focus areas 1. Research HRIDAY undertakes multi-dimensional research on various issues of health including behavioural research, policy and legal research, social sciences research along with cluster randomized trials for evaluating multi-component interventions. • A two-year pilot study entitled HRIDAY-CATCH evaluated the efficacy of a school-based intervention program for cardiovascular health in 1996, with 30 schools in Delhi. • Conducted a collaborative study with University of Texas, USA entitled ‘MYTRI’ (Mobilizing Youth for Tobacco Related Initiatives in India) during 2002-06 – the first ever comprehensive intervention model designed for providing awareness and inculcating advocacy skills among students for tobacco prevention. • Between 2007-2011 HRIDAY launched Project ACTIVITY (Advancing Cessation of Tobacco in Vulnerable Indian Tobacco Consuming Youth), a community- based group randomized intervention trial designed to prevent onset of tobacco use and promote tobacco cessation among youth (10-19 years), living in 14 low socio-economic communities in Delhi, India. • The cross-sectional study “Tobacco use in Bollywood movies, tobacco promotional activities and their association with tobacco use among Indian adolescents” was conducted among nearly 4000 students from 12 schools across New Delhi to assess their current and ever tobacco and alcohol use status, receptivity to tobacco promotions and exposure to tobacco and alcohol use in movies. 2. Awareness Health promotion programmes of HRIDAY at school/ college, home, community and workplaces aim to enhance health awareness among school/college students and empowering them with health advocacy skills. HRIDAY’s health promotion campaigns on physical activity, tobacco and alcohol control, diabetes awareness have received support across India. 3. Advocacy HRIDAY has been instrumental in engaging youth from both schools and colleges for advocating to policymakers for formulation of health promoting policies. HRIDAY has directly engaged with various government agencies and parliamentarians to facilitate health policy reforms along with media advocacy. 4. Capacity Building • HRIDAY has been involved in organizing capacity building programmes for NGOs on various health promotion issues and for law enforcement officials and media persons, at the national as well as sub-national levels. HRIDAY has fostered Government – NGO partnerships to work towards enforcement of effective tobacco control initiatives in India. 5. Legal guidance HRIDAY houses a legal cell with promising legal officers who are engaged in providing legal guidance and support to NGOs and various government agencies at the Centre for various tobacco control initiatives in India. Achievements: • Recognized as ‘A 2010 Case for Prevention and Finalist for the Louise Lown Heart Hero Award’ by ProCor. • Global Health Council’s Award for Best Practices in Global Health 2011 • Youth-led health activism, facilitated by HRIDAY led to launch of its global campaign, Y4H- (Youth for Health).
