Details of Achievements :

Major Activities/Achievements of Foundation for Panjab Studies : Note on the Activities of the Foundation : With a view to promoting research in different areas of Panjab, the Foundation for Panjab Studies was established in March 1990, under the president-ship of Dr. Gurdial Singh Dhillon, Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Prominent persons from different walks of life supported the setting up of the Foundation and consented to be on the Governing Body and the Academic Council of the Society. Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, is now the President of the Foundation and its Institute. Research and Reference Library : In order to promote research programme the Library of Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan, which was placed at the disposal of the Institute, has been strengthened. The extant collection of the library contains over 40,000 titles on different subjects. Private collections have also been added to the reference library. Lectures, Seminars, Conferences and Publications: Since its inception the Foundation and the Institute have been organizing lectures, seminars and conferences promoting literary and cultural heritage of Panjab. A two-day Seminar on `Cultural Heritage of Panjab’ was organised by the Foundation in March 1990. A seminar on “Early 20th Century Punjab” was organized in the University of London from Sept. 24-26, 1990.An International conference on `Punjabi Heritage’ was organized in collaboration with Singapore Sikh Educational Foundation in June, 1992. An International Seminar on `Partition in Retrospect’ was organized in August 1997, in collaboration with the India International Centre, New Delhi. In addition lectures by eminent scholars such as Prof. V.N. Datta, Prof. G.S. Bhalla, Prof. B. N. Goswami, were also organized. A function was organized to release Prof. Hew McLeod’s book on `The Sikhs of the Khalsa’ wherein S. Khushwant Singh presided. To mark the tercentenary of the Khalsa in 1999 the Foundation took up a major research project of locating, cataloging and photographing relics of the Sikh Gurus and other historic personalities. Based on research and field-work and photographs eight pictorial books were published by the Foundation under the `Panjab Heritage Series’ which were launched in the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Foundation took up another major project in connection with the quad-centenary of installation of Guru Granth Sahib in 2004. Under this project the Foundation located, cataloged and digitized rare Guru Granth Sahib Birs in collaboration with National Manuscripts Mission. Based on research and photographs the Foundation took up a major project and published three pictorial books – Guru Granth Sahib: The Guru Eternal, In the Footsteps of Guru Gobind Singh, and Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib: Journey Into Eternity. The first book was released by Shri M. Hamid Ansari, the Vice-President of India, other books were released during the main celebrations in Hazur Sahib. The Institute is now working on another major project of preparing a four volume Biographical Dictionary of Prominent Punjabis with Prof. Bipan Chandra as its Chief Editor and documenting tangible and intangible heritage of Panjab. In addition we are also publishing another two volume catalog of Guru Granth Sahib Birs which will be out later this year or early next year.
