Deshkal Society aims to realize the vision of socially and economically inclusive development with dignity, equity, and justice for all through interventions in the thematic areas of elementary education, right to homestead land, and sustainable rural livelihoods and culture..
Our Work
The core areas of our work are:
Elementary Education
• Grassroots interventions for enhancing school effectiveness and promoting inclusive classroom practices in government primary schools that could enhance learning achievement of children from diverse and deprived social backgrounds.
• Facilitating inclusive teaching-learning practices through capacity building of school teachers.
• Research and documentation for developing a contextualised understanding of the issues of exclusion/ inclusion in elementary education, and for identifying school and community based factors responsible for educational failure of children from diverse and deprived backgrounds.
• Policy advocacy and network building for promoting inclusive quality education for children from diverse backgrounds through national and international seminars and workshops, and publication of books and reports.
Homestead Land Rights
• Grassroots interventions for facilitating realisation of homestead land rights of the landless and marginalised communities.
• Capacity building of landless and marginalised communities through formation of CBOs, awareness generation and training for accessing and availing benefits of laws and policies.
• Policy advocacy and public campaigns for making government institutions and structures responsive and accountable to the land rights and entitlements of landless and marginalised communities.
• Survey, research and documentation for identifying issues and challenges, and disseminating evidence for effective policy advocacy and public campaigns.
Sustainable Rural Livelihood and Culture
• Engagement with issues around culture, development and identity among marginalised communities.
• Incorporating culture as a dynamic concept into basic planning for sustainable livelihood of marginalised communities.
• Promoting economically remunerative, decentralised and dignified livelihood options based on cultural practices/ creative expressions of marginalised communities.
• Research and documentation for preservation and dignified representation of the living cultural traditions of marginalized communities.
