Major Activities/Achievements : Dance Alliance is the India chapter of the World Dance Alliance- Asia Pacific and is based in New Delhi. The India chapter, comprising the Kolkata, Karnataka and Maharashtra chapters, has been in operation since 1998 and has been engaged in various events and activities around dance and dance research. The Dance Alliance was officially registered in September 2009 as a registered society. Word Dance Alliance – Asia Pacific was founded by Carl Woltzwith a mission to serve as a primary voice and support group for dance in the Asia Pacific region. WDA Asia Pacific is one of three regional centres that make up WDA. The other two are WDA Americas www.wdaamericas.org and WDA Europe www.wda-europe.com. Dance Alliance has laid immense importance on equal and simultaneous emphasis on creating a platform for discussions and debate on practice and theory of dance. In an attempt to open dialogues among individuals who are concerned with important areas of dance practice and research in the context of history as well as topics of contemporary relevance, Dance Alliance has engaged in networking, organizing national as well as international events involving eminent and emerging scholars and practitioners in the field of dance. Following these goals, Dance Alliance organized the international conference titled “Re-searching Dance” in 2009, which was attended by delegates from US, UK, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Philippines, Australia, among many others. The publication, Edited by Urmimala Sarkar and Stephanie Burridge titled “Traversing Traditions: Celebrating Dance in India”, was published by Routledge, Delhi as part of a series “Celebrating Dance in Asia and the Pacific” in 2011. The different state chapters of Dance Alliance has continued to organize felicitation of eminent dancers and critics and has organized lecture series, workshops, performances and residencies, since its inception as a chapter of World Dance Alliance-AP in 2004, before it was formally registerd.
