BHAI VIR SINGH SAHITYA SADAN Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan was established in Delhi in 1958 in the memory of Bhai Vir Singh to further the objectives of his works. While the foundation stone of the building was laid in March, 1972, by President Shri V.V.Giri, the memorial was inaugurated by President N.Sanjeeva Reddy, in 1978. Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan made all round development under the Presidentship of S.Surjit Singh Majithia, Sardar Bahadur Ujjal Singh, Sardar Arjan Singh, R.B. Sohan Lal, S. Swaran Singh, Dr. G.S. Dhillon, S. Harnam Singh Suri, Prof. Harbans Singh played significant role in the initial years. Presently Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, is the Chairman with Shri Kuldip Nayar, Mrs. Mohini Giri, Gen. Joginder Singh and Dr.J.S. Neki on the Governing Committee. i) Bhai Vir Singh Reference Library : The Library of the Sadan has a rich collection of books in Punjabi language and literature and history and culture of Punjab. Valuable private collections and microfilms and xerox copies of rare material have also been added to the Reference Library. The Library is a member of the Delhi Library Network. ii) Centenary Celebration of the Khalsa Samachar: The Sadan has been regularly running a Punjabi weekly the Khalsa Samachar founded by Bhai Vir Singh in 1899. Special numbers of the Khalsa Samachar are brought out on occasions such as Gurpurabs and the birth and death anniversaries of Bhai Sahib Bhai Vir Singh. In 1999 special issue of the Khalsa Samachar was brought out to mark centenary of this oldest Punjabi weekly. iii. International Seminar on Guru Granth Sahib and its Context (2005): To mark Quidcentenary of installation of Guru Granth Sahib in Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, a major International Seminar was organized by the Sadan in the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on October 30-31, 2005. The Seminar which was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, was presided over by Shri Jaipal Reddy, the then Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Culture. iv. Seminar on Partition of India in Retrospect : A major seminar on Partition in connection with 50 years of India’s independence was arranged by the National Institute of Panjab Studies on 8th August, 1997. The seminar was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri I.K. Gujral. v. International Seminar on `Pluralistic Vision of Guru Granth Sahib’: To mark the Tercentenary of Gurgadi Divas of Guru Granth Sahib an International Seminar on `Pluralistic Vision of Guru Granth Sahib’ was organized in the Vigyan Bhawan in collaboration with the Dept. of Culture, Government of India, which was inaugurated by Smt. Pratibha Patil, Hon’ble President of India, on December 16, 2010. Monthly functions are being arranged in collaboration with the Punjabi Academy, Delhi, to promote composite Punjabi language, literature and culture. Free medical facilities, regular medical check up camps, coaching and computer facilities are also being provided to the poor students in the neighborhood.
