ABHAYA was born out of a deep concern for the helpless mental patients of the Government Mental Hospitals of Kerala. The relentless efforts of ABHAYA focused the attention of the public, the Government and particularly the judiciary on the pitiable conditions of the mental hospitals of Kerala. Consequently the mental health scenario of Kerala is undergoing a healthy change. Athani was established as a care home for women in distress. Battered, deceived and abused women take refuge here and get emotional, medical legal and psychological help.Helpline for women Here, 24 hr. help is provided to women who face crises. Adalath for Women One of the most prestigious projects of Abhaya is the Womens’ Adalat under the joint auspices of Kerala Legal Services Authority and Abhaya. Cases are held every second Saturday of the month where sitting Judges preside and a group of lawyers assist the conduct of the sessions. This service has proved extremely useful to women in distress, especially those hailing from the poor sections of the society. Abhaya gramam His His Holiness The Dalai Lama laid the foundation stone for Abhyagramam in 1992. H.E. Sri. K.R. Narayanan inaugurated Abhayagramam in 1995. Karma Karma is a rehabilitation centre for mental patients from the lower strata of society, where they get free medical aid, care, skill development training. They have facilities for recreation, and are free to roam around the 10 acre plot. It is a mental health centre with a difference. Abhayabala It is a home for the deprived girl child. Girls from high risk groups and children in distress, take refuge in Abhayabala. We have 111 girls under Abhaya’s umbrella now studying from pre- school upto universities and professional colleges. Rehabititation for Young girls from streets Young girls who were used for begging and other antisocial activities are housed in our women’s centre. The Court and the police bring them to Abhaya. Most of them are from neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. They are provided basic education, skill development, and training in music, dance, stitching, karate etc Bodhi A de-addiction hospital which provides treatment and counseling and follow-up care to substance abuse patients. Mitra A full-fledged mental health centre which gives treatment for mental disorders and substance abuse. This is the only paid centre which provides support to Abhaya’s other units which are all totally free. Pakalveedu (Day Care Centre) Mental patients discharged from hospital who are staying in their homes and those about to be discharged from the hospital attend this day care centre Sraddha Bhavanam A dream project of Abhaya for mental patients discharged from hospitals is becoming true with the help of the Kerala High Court and the Government of Kerala. The scheme is to have one Sraddha Bhavanam each in every District under the supervision of an NGO, with assistance from the Panchayat and Governmental help. Each Sraddha Bhavanam will have four units – A home for Long Stay, A Short Stay Home, a Day Care Centre and a Follow-up treatment unit. Abhaya has already started this work and we are happy the High Court and the Government have accepted our proposal for the most unfortunate people on earth – the mentally ill
