Major Activities/Achievements of Assam Association Delhi : Assam Association, Delhi, a non-political Socio-cultural organization was founded in 1947. Eminent personalities like Late Sri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad, Ex-President of India; Late Sri Hem Barua, ex-Member of Parliament, Late Dinesh Chandra Goswami, former Cabinet Minister, and many other prominent personalities like late Sri Dev Kant Barooah, Padma Bhushan BijoyBhagwati, late Shri Jogen Chandra Hazarika, ex-Chief Minister of Assam, etc were closely associated with setting up and running of the organization. Present members include illustrious personalities like Dr Manmohan Singh, Mr TarunGogoi (CM, Assam),Mr Paban Singh Ghatowar (MOS, DoNER, Mr. Bhubaneswar Kalita ( President, APCC), Dr. JayantaMadhab, SmtSubhalakshmi Khan, Mr AjitHazarika (Director ONGC), Mr B C Bora (Ex CMD-ONGC/OIL), Mr N NGogoi (Ex CMD OIL), Mr B BSarma (Ex CMD OIL), many senior doctors, engineers, bureaucrats, PSU bosses etc. It has over 575 life members and more than 3000 active members. Apart from that it is viewed as the fulcrum of Assamese and as the credible interface among NER communities in the National Capital Territory. A. It holds the following regular events in the calendar year: • Rongali Bihu Festival : April • Tithi of Srimanta Sankaradeva : August/September • Id Milan : Nov/December • Cultural festival/special events : Nov/December B. The Association publishes a Magazine called ‘Samayik’ bi yearly, which gives a platform to the members for honing their writing skills. It has a monthly newsletter called ‘Jogajog’ in Assamese & English which aims at keeping its members connected and create an information network about the happenings in the National Capital. It has a website www.assamassociationdelhi.org The Association cherished a dream to have its own infrastructure to carry forward activities and objectives in a permanent way in the National Capital. The Association acquired a plot of land measuring 836-sq. mtr. located at A 14 B, SatsangMarg, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi – 110067 in the year 1989. The centre has been christened “Srimanta Sankaradeva Bhawan” after the great 15th century Vashnavite saint, social reformer, and architect of a distinctive Assamese culture and ethos, Sri Srimanta Sankaradeva. The main objectives of the centre is to house a Cultural centre for Research, Development and Training in the famous dance forms of Assam and NE and other forms of folk dances, drama and music; a school for imparting short term certificate course in Assamese and other local languages of NE is also being planned. It also has sizable facility to accommodate about 50 people at any point of time for providing lodging facilities to people coming to Delhi for short stay. This apart, it will house an Art Gallery for artists from Assam and NE, a vocational training centre, information centre, library, conference hall, terrace restaurant, food court, a 250 seater auditorium, open air-theater, backrooms, and office space for the Association and caretaker’s office.
