All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) is a premier self-help organization of the blind in the country and is affiliated to the World Blind Union, the sole International voice of the blind. AICB was presented the best NGO National Award in the disability sector in 2006 and was honored by the then President of India. Its high-speed computerized Braille press has been adjudged the best Braille press in the country by the Government of India and was presented a special National Award of Rs. one lakh at a function in Vigyan Bhawan on January4, 2009 on the occasion of 200th Birth Anniversary of Louis Braille-the inventor of reading and writing system for visually impaired persons. AICB is made up of over 20 afiliates across the country and represents thousands of blind men and women. It has about 20 projects with over 100 employees with an annual budget of about Rs. Three crores. AICB conducts a wide array of services which benefit hundreds of visually challenged children and adults. Prominent among these are: 1. A state-of-the-art special school for blind children in a village in Gurgaon district. 2. The largest Braille printing press in the country. 3. A talking book studio-cum-cassette library for college-going blind students. 4. Vocational courses in stenography and IT applications. 5. Training courses for the newly blinded adults. 6. A hostel for college-going blind girls. 7. A scheme for Merit Scholarships and computer-support for blind girls pursuing under graduate and post graduate courses across the country. 8. Rural rehabilitation programmes for the blind in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. 9. Provision of interest free loans to blind persons for self-employment ventures in rural areas. 10. Pensions to the elderly blind persons. 11. Eye-care and eye-health services. 12. Braille equipment bank services. 13. Advocacy initiatives for visually impaired persons denied their due rights. 14. A number of Braille journals. 15. Research projects in the field of education and employment for the blind. Facts at a glance 2008-2009 Free education to V.I. Children: 120 Braille production: produced 5462246 Braille pages and benefited over 25000 blind readers in the country. Recording Studio-cum-cassette library: 734 master cassettes, 29801 cassettes copied and benefited 1215 blind students. Vocational training: about 60 blind persons received training in stenography and computer application. Adjustment training: 40 newly blinded persons received training free of charge. Women empowerment: merit scholarships of Rs. 926000/- to 70 blind girls, free hostel facility to 41 college-going girls, leadership and other training facility were provided to 176 blind girls. Placement: 203 blind persons were placed in rural and urban areas by providing interest free loan of Rs. 1529000.00. Community Based Rehabilitation: Training and rehabilitation services provided to 405 blind persons in rural areas. Eye-Care: Eye screening: 79585 IOl surgeries 2596 Free Eye Glasses: 4939 and at subsidized rates: 13808 Braille equipment bank benefited over 9000 blind persons by providing basic Braille equipment worth Rs. 11,78,168.00 on subsidized rates.
