Details of Achievements :

Introduction CASA is as old as the Independent India. It came into being way back in 1947 to respond to the apathies of partition of India and Pakistan. Though its initial focus was on providing immediate relief to victims of natural and human induced calamities, CASA has today grown into a premier relief and development organization in the country, acting as the outreach arm of 24 Protestant and Orthodox Churches in India. Its primary objective today is to strengthen the poor and promote the efforts of marginalized groups of the Indian society towards sustainable development leading to social justice and self-sufficiency. While CASA is a Christian organisation constituted and supported by the Churches, its outlook is secular and it is mandated by the Indian Protestant and Orthodox Churches to carry out its interventions irrespective of religious, ethnic, caste or political considerations. CASA’s registered headquarters are located in New Delhi. It has established 3 Zonal offices in the cities of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, and 18 sector offices from where its country-wide programmes are implemented and monitored by more than 500 employees. We are operational in more than 4,500 villages with around 350 partner organisations. PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES OF CASA: It can be divided into three categories. 1.Direct Programmes: The Core Programme This is basically the direct interventions of CASA with the community for their overall development, through the 33 Resource Centres, spread across 14 states. CASA is operational in 26 States & Union Territories reaching out to more than 4,500 villages. 2. Package Programmes: Collective Forms of Cooperation (CFC) This was initiated in the year 1988 as an enduring partnership with a shared conviction and commitment between CASA, the Programme implementing Organizations (PIOs) and EED as the resource-sharing partner. The following are the CFC Programmes of CASA ➢ Development Initiative in Western Orissa ➢ Empowerment of NGOs in West Bengal ➢ Rajasthan Development Project – Phase III / Rajasthan Vikash Manch ➢ Restoring Lost Childhood Project (RLCP) ➢ Development Programme in North East India (DPNEI) ➢ Lymphatic Filariasis Programme in Orissa ➢ Community Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Programme (CDPMP) ➢ West Bengal Community Based Disaster Preparedness Programme ➢ Community Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP) ➢ Food Security and Nutrition Improvement Programme (FSNIP) ➢ Regional Inter Agency Partnership (RIAP) between India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka) ➢ Food for Community Development Programe ➢ Material Aid Section (MAS) 3. Emergency and Humanitarian Assistance This area has been the key to CASA from its very inception. Thanks to its vast experience of more than half a century in the field of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, today CASA is one of the premier organization in this field. It has responded effectively to all major disasters that struck India since 1947 onwards. CASA’s Relief and Rehabilitation programmes in the Andhra Pradesh cyclone of 1977, the Orissa Super Cyclone of 1999, the Gujarat earthquake of 2001, the Tsunami of 2004 and the earthquake in J&K region in 2005, 2008 Kosi flood in Bihar and the most recent Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh Floods of 2009 have been tremendous. The Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation Programme of CASA has been the biggest in the History of our organization, reaching out to more than 50,000 families in all the affected areas. PARADIGM SHIFT in the Core Programmes of CASA In order to remain relevant to the changing context, over the last 6 decades CASA has gone through a process of transformation and continuous growth. Several years of discussions, consultations and PSP emerged a Perspective Plan in the year 2003, which called for a Paradigm shift for the next decade 2003-2013. This paradigm shift was in terms of:- • Shifting from Need Based to Issue based to Rights Based Approach (RBA) • Ownership of the development process by the people • Value addition to the programme (through strategic alliances and integration of relief and development) • Involvement of broader civil society in development issues • Strengthening democratic and just governance • Building future leadership (amongst Churches, partners and other stakeholders) Six Thrust Areas were identified in the New Perspective Plan with the RBA being the focus: 1. Sustainable Livelihood and Local Self-governance 2. Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation 3. Perspective & Capacity Building 4. Advocacy, Networking and Alliance Building 5. Research, Communication and Documentation 6. Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Management 7. Climate Change (justice), Social equity Audit, Local Capacities for Peace are some of the cross cutting themes for CASA.
